and another thing.....

How do you think the play of 'Antigone' would have been different if the main character had not been a woman?

NOOOO, i just wrote a really long answer, then my computer stuffed up and i lost it!!!
I can't believe i missed this question.
Here i go again:

The audience of Sophocles' time may have sympathised more with a male hero than a heroine due to the social standing of women at the time. However, a male hero would have been more arrogant and less submissive than Antigone (not that she was really that submissive, but you get my point)a male hero would have to put up more of a fight, being a male cuz thats what boys do, and this would probably lower the amount of sympathy from the audience.
The play would be completely different as the deaths of Haemon and his mother would not occur as Haemon would not defend a male lead to the extent of committing suicide, which, it turn, would prevent the death of his mother. This would cause the play to lose a vital aspect of a Greek tragedy and would not enforce the themes that Sophocles was trying to convey, as Creon would not suffer for his actions. Creon would also lose the role of a villan, as his remarks on the role of women would have to be excluded from the play.
Overall, the play would make no sense.

My old reply was much better, but enjoy anyway.
